Project Description
This townhouse needed an upgrade from builder grade fixtures and tiles. Keeping the children in mind as the main users of this space, I designed a colourful terrazzo family bathroom with a cheerful colour palette.
This project as a whole included two bathroom renovations and the fit out of a laundry room created from a first floor bathroom. A townhouse lends itself to this change of room use as they often have a first floor bathroom that is underused. (Two bedrooms on this floor and one has an en suite, the other is a study/guest bedroom). As a laundry room the space works much harder for this busy household with three children.
But back to the bathroom!
Terrazzo Tiles
I have a fondness for terrazzo-effect tiles in bathroom design. They come in so many colourways, matt and gloss finishes, so you can always find an inspiring tile for each project. For this bathroom, we wanted large format tiles for ease of cleaning and a matt finish. This Jelato Tutti Frutti multi-coloured terrazzo tile at 66cm square features a range of colours I could pick up on in other elements of the scheme.
From this tile I took the pinky/red and reflected that in a rectangular floor tile called Stromboli. I love this porcelain tile, it has a really smooth finish and comes in a wide variety of colours including this soft pink. I also picked up the green fleck for the vanity unit. This model with rounded corners brings a playful touch to the design. Lastly, the shower curtain from La Redoute played back many of the tile colours and gave a lot of energy to the bathroom.
The layout of this bathroom stayed the same, but we improved cleanability in three ways. Firstly with a wall hung toilet, secondly a wall hung vanity and thirdly by laying the tiles up the side of the bath (with an access panel for emergencies). Due to wanting to retain a tiled area at the end of the bath for kid's items, the bath is faily petite at 170cm long. However, the rounded end is comfortable and reflects the curves of the vanity and toilet while the other end is straight to maximise shower space.
The colour and pattern in this design certainly brings some personality to this top floor bathroom. You can see how it looked before in the gallery here.
