Project Description

This Victorian bathroom and adjoining cloakroom are in a beautiful house in Reigate. Built in the early 1900s, the house provided lots of visual cues which influenced the design. For the colour palette I started with the untreated pine windows and trim throughout the home. I contrasted this with mid and dark greens to evoke a pine forest. I modernised the space with contemporary fixtures and fittings to strike a harmonious balance betweent the style of the home and the needs of the family.

The home owners have a pared back style, so I didn't want to crowd the room with colour and pattern. I kept the pattern feature to the tiles and chose the Atlas tile from Ca'Pietra. Its starburst design reflected other wrought iron details at the property and gave the desired amount of Victorian bathroom atmosphere. I chose to run the vanity tiling floor to ceiling to mirror the shower walls opposite and to create a visual feature on this wall.

With a matte finish the Atlas tiles co-ordinated well with the wood-effect porcelain tiles also from Ca'Pietra, which brought warmth to the scheme - quite literally too as the owners took the opportunity to install underfloor heating. To bring contrast and drama to the room, the elegant free-standing bath from Waters was painted in a dark, forest green. It has a beautiful matte finish and is finished with floor-mounted chrome taps.

My brief was to include a nice, large washbasin for the owner's sons who are currently living at home and using this family bathroom. The Avanti model from Sonos was generously proportioned and I hope that the splashes will be contained within its deep sides. The vanity features two drawers for storage as well. Whenever I can, I like to install a generous towel rail to give plenty of space for drying towels, which was achieved here.

During the creation of this design I realised that the original shower over bath need not be replicated in the new room. Generous room dimensions meant there was space to install a quadrant shower and a stand-alone bath. With the shower tray set into the floor and a free-standing bath centered under the window, a more luxurious bathroom was created.

Adjoining Cloakroom

Victorian cloakroom with green star patterned tile floor, half height green painted walls, pine trim and window frame and a wall mounted sink and towel warmer.

Next to the Victorian bathroom is the cloakroom. Here I decided to flip the placement of the tiles to make a traditional Victorian tiled floor with half-height painted walls - to mimic a panelled effect. I matched the paint to the darker green in the tiles and we installed traditional fixtures and fittings.
