Project Description
A client came to me with a new type of brief recently. She was looking for ideas in advance of moving into a new home. She explained that in previous homes, they had sometimes rushed to improve aspects of the house for a quick win, and then later on wished they had thought through the changes more, so that they could maximise the floor plan. I was commissioned to come up with two floor plans for the ground floor of her soon-to-be new home. One that worked with the existing room configurations and one that pushed out into the garage and utility room to maximise the floor space.
The mood board above shows a selection of the elements that I put together and presented to her. The first floor plan pushed the lounge out widthways to make two seating areas - one for conversation and relaxing and one for TV. It also incorporated a ground floor shower room off the lounge. This could be lit from a skylight in the flat garage roof above. I also pushed the very compact kitchen out into the current utility room. This allows for a slim island in the floor plan (another element on her wish list), and very much needed extra storage and countertop space.
The images on the accompanying mood boards illustrated each of the areas I had designed and gave her stylish tips and tricks to make best use of the space.
The client was very happy with the end presentation and said that it had given her lots of ideas she wouldn't have thought of herself. Normally I enjoy bringing my designs to life in an actual house, but this time it was nice to be free to suggest what the possibilities could be.
