Project Description

For this brief I was asked to design an en suite bathroom in an attic suite that was being newly created. This beautiful house just outside Dorking in Westcott, was having a whole new roof and the owners were taking the opportunity to create a master suite in the attic for themselves. The house has wonderful sweeping views of the surrounding countryside and is set quite high on a hill. I wanted the set of rooms to feel light and bright and so the concept of IN THE CLOUDS was born.

I didn't want the en suite to be so white it felt sterile, so my starting point was a soft and dreamy feature wall for the shower. These large format marble tiles with mainly grey veining also have a hint of blue. Chosen to evoke clouds scudding across the sky, the large shower enclosure has a white slate-effect shower tray and simple ceramic tiles to each side.

The clients wanted a very swish toilet and we installed the Vitra V-Care Comfort Smart washing and drying WC complete with heated seat and remote control!

I picked up the sky theme with the double vanity unit painted in a match of a Little Greene light blue. The vanity has lots of storage space in the double drawers, but is wall-hung to allow the flooring to sweep underneath and give a feeling of spaciousness. I was able to specify all the details of this double vanity and added the very cool Coalbrook taps and mixers for a smart look.

I chose oval mirrors to sit above the sinks and reeded glass wall lights to complete this wall. To bounce light around this attic en suite I chose an artisan off-white tile with natural movement, which also helped the space to not feel sterile with the soft grey grout which matches the marble shower tiling.

The dark blue bath in a nook in the main bedroom

The bath in this suite is situated in the bedroom, set beautifully under a feature round window and on a small plinth. I decided to install a coloured bath, as a white bath would have looked out of place in the bedroom setting. This gorgeous shape is the I-Line freestanding bath from Waters of Ashbourne and I specified the blue paint colour of RAL 5011 to give some drama to this area of the room. The plinth also allows the pale oak flooring (Avalon from Porcelain Superstore) to shine.

This project was part of a significant build for the clients and they are thrilled with the end result. I project managed this installation for them, which allowed them to concentrate on managing the other elements of this extensive home renovation.
