Project Description

This family bathroom was a plain, boring hot potch of old fixtures before I got to work on it! Inspired to create something that evoked an Art Deco swimming pool, I decided that this space (which had been a separate toilet and bathroom once upon a time) needed some structural changes to really pack a design punch.

Rooms with a central door work so much better if you can design symmetrically, so my first job was to work on the window sizes. I enlarged what was the original toilet window on the left and decreased the size of the original bathroom window on the right. This created two identical windows which fill the room with light and frame the central vanity unit.

I already knew a bath fit down the length of the room, but I switched it to the left side and chose a back-to-wall design to give some curve appeal. The toilet moved to the front right wall for layout reasons and to allow for better drainage as the client sometimes experienced bad smells from the pipes in summer. I placed a Crosswater corner shower enclosure on the right side of the door. Tip - I used a quadrant shower enclosure which allows you to have one side longer than the other. This tray is 80cm along one side and 100cm on the other to maximise the showering space.

The Art Deco design led me to glacier green glass tiles from Mandarin Stone (now discontinued). They are laid vertically and edged half way up with black trim for a traditional Deco feel. I went monochrome with the floor tiles - a beautiful matte tile called Stromboli that comes in a variety of colours. Here I chose black and white to flow across the space in a geometric pattern. The black accent was further highlighted with the mixer taps for the sink and bath.

To prevent the room becoming too sterile I included walnut as my feature wood for warmth and texture. The Crosswater vanity unit is walnut veneer and I put wood blocks into the new window cavities as window sills. There is a walnut-framed Art Deco print on the wall above the bath too.

The whole room has come together so well. This bathroom is in a bungalow and the view from the hallway of the central vanity unit with round mirror above is fabulous.
