Project Description
The owners of a beautiful house in Wescott, Dorking asked me to design several rooms in a major home renovation they were undertaking. As they had to replace the roof of the property they decided to take the opportunity to create an attic suite for themselves, comprising a bedroom, en suite bathroom and snug. On the first floor the renovation meant they wanted me to design a new bathroom, a bedroom for their daughter and second room to be used as a bedroom for their grown up son when he visits, but that could also be used as a hang out space for their daughter.
Attic Suite
The design theme for the attic suite was 'In the Clouds'. The couple were installing multiple Velux windows as well as the amazing push out model that create a small balcony (seen in the image of the snug below). I wanted to reflect the idea of being in the sky with a light colour palette, with midnight blue for contrast. In the bathroom I chose an artisan tile to bounce light around the space, paired with a sky blue vanity and a blue and grey veined marble tile for the shower wall to bring some drama. I used natural wood tones for the furniture and joinery to bring warmth and texture. The bedroom lights are large Flos orbs designed to resemble the full moon.
First Floor Rooms
The first floor rooms have a simple and stylish Scandi theme and colour palette. In their daughter's bedroom I clad the Puffball Loaf bed in Rocking Horse Clever Velvet and reflected this with the Radicchio red paint on the chimney breast. I clad the alcove walls and behind the bed with timber batons to create textural interest. I chose black edged elements for the room including the mirror, bedside tables and lighting fixtures to give the colour scheme a modern edge. I placed a large round chair in the corner and tied the colours together with dalmation print linen. (The client added her own trailing ivy).
The first floor bathroom was predominently going to be used by my client's daughter, so I kept the palette modern and fresh. I used navy blue for contrast with the peachy pink and white elements, which ties it to the palette of the other room too. I altered the architect's plans to bring out the whole wall (instead of boxing in pipes) so that we could recess a lit vanity in the shower, a TV above the toilet and a lit cupboard above the vanity. I repeated the white oak herringbone floor from upstairs for continuity through the home.
For the other bedroom I selected a comfy sofa bed from Swoon in Kingfisher velvet and used the Aranami wallpaper on the wall behind and the desk alcove. I repeated the wall batons behind the media unit and TV to break up the opposite wall. The simple furniture from Swoon has an industrial edge to suit their son's style when he's staying.
2024 update
At the start of 2024 I am working on a design scheme for the front room at this home. The owners want to create a space that is cosy for coffee with friends, but can also be used for cocktails pre-dinner. I have selected a textured wallpaper to elevate the walls beyond a paint treatment and I'm going to place two curved sofas facing each other. I have sourced a rosewood vintage sideboard and two mid-century chairs for reupholstery to fit the scheme. Photos coming soon!
